CURRENT local authority housing requirement statistics in the Killarney municipal district show there are 597 applicants on a waiting list for one-bed dwellings and a further 368 on the two-bed waiting list.
Responding to questions submitted by Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, who asked what plans were being made to address to address the extensive waiting lists, council officials said the recent building programme has included the development of 59 one and two-bed social housing units at Oakwood in Ballydribeen.
It is a project undertaken by Kerry County Council in association with approved housing body Clúid and it is the largest undertaking of its type in the county.
The council’s housing capital section also recently completed six units at Pinewood Estate which includes four one-bed dwellings and two two-bed units.
In Rathmore, which is part of the Killarney municipal district, 20 units – including eight two-bed units – are under construction and are due for substantial completion at the end of 2020 and there are further plans to develop 10 units at Rock Road in Killarney which will include six two-bed units and four one-bed properties.
In addition, the council’s leasing programme includes the provision of one and two bed units.
