On a wonderful night for Dr Crokes, the club’s senior hurlers made the trip to Lixnaw to meet the home side in the preliminary round of the North Kerry Senior Hurling Championship.

With a strong wind advantage in the first half, Crokes linked up well together to build a formidable lead and long-range points from Mark Heffernan, Tom Doyle and Galway native Vinny Doyle saw them with a 0-14 to 1-3 advantage at half-time.

Crokes started the second half well, against the breeze, but Lixnaw got a grip on the game and, with another goal, levelled matters 15 minutes in.

It was then back and forth, with a spread of scorers including Kevin Landers, Jack and Michael Lenihan and Rob Ryan for Crokes.

Both sides hit some uncharacteristic wides in what was a very free-flowing skillful game, resulting in a level scoreline at the full-time whistle, 0-22 to 2-16.

Both sides gave everything they had in extra-time in what was a real classic, enjoyed by the spectators.

James Murphy and Mike Milner held strong in midfield and defence, winning vital possession and delivering forward for Crokes who contested every ball and persevered as a team to claim a well-earned victory.

Coached by Aidan O’Mahony, the Killarney side, understood to be the first South Kerry side to win in the North Kerry Championship, now progresses to face Crotta O’Neill’s at a date and venue to be confirmed.
