ITT stars outshone by late goals

David Clifford notched seven points for IT Tralee

DESPITE boasting a star-studded inside forward line of David Clifford, Tony Brosnan and Barry John Keane, IT Tralee paid a high price for defensive frailties when Carlow IT pounced for three goals inside the last 10 minutes of a dramatic Sigerson Cup game at Austin Stack Park, Tralee this afternoon.

Clifford hit seven points – four from pay – as Tralee held the edge for the majority of the encounter but they were caught short late in the game with Carlow surging to win on a 3-9 to 1-13 scoreline.

Clifford, not surprisingly, was the outstanding player on view and he showcased his skills at regular intervals. The Tralee effort should have been enough to seen them through, particularly as they led by six points approaching the close, but they were caught napping.

Barry John Keane: Scored IT Tralee’s only goal

After a dour first half, IT Tralee led 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time and Clifford increased the advantage right after the restart and the game looked well over when Barry John Keane bulged the Carlow net after 51 minutes.

IT Tralee, whose cause wasn’t helped when they had to start without Gavin Crowley, Dara Moynihan and Michael Potts, were rocked back on their heels when Carlow struck for a hat-trick of goals, courtesy of Adam Steed, Conor Doyle and a penalty from their outstanding player Cian Farrell, an inter-county star with Offaly.

Despite that treble bombshell, IT had one last chance to save the day but Barry John Keane – who was straight through on goal – couldn’t find the net.

Scorers for IT Tralee: David Clifford 0-7 (0-3 frees), Barry John Keane 1-3 (0-1 free), Tony Brosnan 0-3.
