KERRY was a sea of green and gold with a very distinctive red hue last night as a mini squad of county GAA stars, past and present, could scarcely contain their excitement as Liverpool FC clinched their first league title in an incredible 30 years.

With passionate Reds tuned in all over Kerry, Jurgen Klopp’s swashbuckling team of all the talents celebrated long into the night after Chelsea registered a 2-1 victory over Manchester City to ensure the coveted silverware is destined for Anfield with red ribbons attached.

There is no shortage of Liverpool fans in the ranks of the GAA in Kerry with star forward Paul Geaney, Colm Cooper and Killian Young all taking to Twitter to express their joy.

Geaney posted a musical note: “Jurgen Klopp, Klopp, Klopp, He’s the King of the Kop. Jurgen Klopp, Klopp, Klopp. He has taken us to the top”

One word was sufficient, meanwhile, for a more reserved Colm Cooper and Killian Young, who simply posted: “Wonderful” and “Champions” respectively.

But pride of place in the celebration stakes must go to former Kerry wing forward and Cromane star, Sean O’Sullivan, who posted a short video of himself standing on the roof of his garage with a giant Liverpool flag, chanting happily and waving a red smoke flare.

“From the back garden where myself and @slabsullivan pretended to be Beardsley @officialbarnesy and @Ian_Rush9,” he said of his admiration for Liverpool legends.

“We didn’t think we’d have to wait so long but the perch never felt so good! #Champions,” he gushed.

Two other former Kerry players didn’t have much cause for celebration, however.

Aware of the likely online onslaught from Liverpool fans, dead ball specialist Bryan Sheehan said: “Right, that’s the end of social media for a few months” while passionate Manchester United fan Darran O’Sullivan tweeted: “So social media, we had a good run! See ya later”.
