A DOCUMENTARY on the life and playing career of Kerry GAA and basketball legend Kieran Donaghy has been shortlisted in the inaugural RTS Ireland Television Awards.
The Laochra Gael programme on TG4 has been nominated in the sport category and the awards aim to showcase and give recognition to the Irish TV industry for achievements and excellence in creative production over the past year.
The winners will be announced on Virgin Media One next Tuesday at 11.00pm and the ceremony will be presented by Muireann O’Connell.
The man called ‘Star’ told an extraordinary story in the documentary of how he made the breakthrough via the TV series, The Underdogs, the experiment that made a full forward out of him, the basketball hands, the decline and the revival and, of course, Joe Brolly.
And in the background, he shared details of how his complex and difficult relationship with his father was tied up in everything he did on the field of play.
In his days in the green and gold career, Kieran won four All-Ireland medals, three All-Stars and the prestigious Footballer of the Year accolade.
A total of 126 entries were submitted for the first RTS Ireland Television Awards event which is supported by Virgin Media Television, RTÉ, TG4, Sky Ireland, the BAI and Screen Ireland.
Other programmes shortlisted include RTÉ’s Normal People, Virgin Media Television’s Covid news special, Opening Up The Country, and the Sky Sports coverage of the GAA Championships.
Comedian Dara Ó Briain will be presented with a special award for his outstanding contribution to the Irish television industry.
The RTS Ireland Television Awards committee recruited independent judges who spent the last few weeks reviewing and evaluating creative excellence and achievement in nine categories.
