The Killarney National Park Education team surpassed and exceeded the Bioblitzs challenge during a very successful Biodiversity Week 2025.
The challenge was a friendly competition with 85 other national park sites across Europe with the aim to record the highest number of species during Biodiversity Week.
Killarney National Park came eighth out of 86, with 647 species being recorded throughout the week.
Veluwe Natura 2000 site, in the Netherlands was the overall winner with 1,627 species.
Killarney moved up from ninth place last year – with a total of 514 species – and experienced a huge increase this year in the number of recorders with many members of the general public getting involved.
During Biodiversity Week – an annual celebration of nature and wildlife – Killarney National Park Education Centre staff organised a number of nature walks in Derrycunnihy and Ross Island where people were encouraged to take photographs of all manner of flora and fauna using their smartphones and to upload to the ObsIdentify app.
The competition also raised awareness of the amazing number and variety of different species occurring in Killarney National Park.
Citizen science projects like Bioblitz greatly assist the educators and conservation rangers who continually monitor and record various species in the park.
