Killarney the perfect base for national orienteering championships

It’s a wrap: The Irish Orienteering Championships 2022 were held in Kerry over four days in Killarney with 500 athletes competing in the big event organised by Kerry Orienteering Club.

Killarney town welcomed over competitors from throughout the country and overseas who were delighted to be participating over some terrific trerrainh majestic scenery, great hospitality and a wonderful atmosphere.
The four-day event generated 1,500 bednights in the greater Killarney area with 95 per cent of participants staying in the town for three nights.

Where it all began: Orienteering in Kerry began with the opening of the Cappanelea National Outdoor Pursuits Centre in 1973, when Seán Ó Suilleabháin and Joss Lynam conceived the idea of an adventure weekend. Now, 40 years later, Cappanlea is part of Kerry College of Further Education and Training offering.
