A SUPREMELY talented young sports woman from Killarney has been selected on the Ireland basketball squad for the Under 16 European Challenge tournament.
Leah McMahon has been included in the elite squad of 23 players currently preparing for the big event in August with the host country still to be confirmed.
Head coach Andy Gill is putting the squad through their paces at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
Leah, who turned 15 last Wednesday, is an accomplished basketballer with the St Paul’s club and she is also an outstanding footballer with Dr Crokes and a top class soccer player with Killarney Celtic.
Always showing great promise through her sporting prowess, Leah was also named the most valuable player when her school, St Brigid’s Secondary School, Killarney, triumphed in the FAI Post-Primary Schools Futsal competition at the ITT Sports Academy in Tralee two years ago.
The daughter of Karl and Áine McMahon, Leah follows her uncle, Aidan O’Shea, from O’Sullivan’s Place, into the international basketball spotlight as he was a key part of the Irish Under 15 team in the 1985/86 season and he was also an outstanding Gaelic footballer with Dr Crokes.
