The magic of a Victorian Christmas recaptured in Muckross

“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach!”
Charles Dickens: A Christmas Carol

A WONDERFUL Victorian Christmas is being prepared by the dedicated staff of Muckross House with Dóchas drama group members, Patricia McSherry (left) portraying the downstairs servant, listening attentively to the head housekeeper, played by Liz Ryan, reading from the Charles Dickens classic festive tale, A Christmas Carol.

Traditional Victorian Christmas decorations, very much in keeping with the big house customs, adorn the downstairs of the most famous house in Killarney which always looks truly magical during the holiday season, whatever the weather.

This wonderful photograph, showing the true magic of Christmas from the Victorian era, is by Killarney photographer Valerie O’Sullivan.
