Major raid follows further drug seizures in town

The suspected cannabis herb discovered in a wood outside Killarney this Sunday

THE major discovery of suspected cannabis herb in a wood outside Killarney and at a nearby house this Sunday is the latest in a series of significant seizures of controlled drugs in the town in recent weeks.

A total of 13 bags of suspected cannabis herb, with an estimated street value of €130,000, was recovered from a wooded area at Kilcummin and a further €10,000 of suspected cannabis herb was seized during a search of a nearby house.

A teenager was arrested at the scene and was brought to Killarney Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Garda Station, who led the investigation, described it one of the largest and significant seizures of drugs in the area for some time.

It brings the total amount of controlled drugs confiscated in the Killarney area in recent weeks, following operations undertaken by the Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit an Killarney Gardai, to approximately €220,000.

“It reflects our commitment to tackling the illegal drugs trade in Killarney and today’s operation was against a backdrop of competing demands for Garda resources on a very busy bank holiday weekend in the town,” Supt Murphy told KillarneyToday.com.

During the course of today’s search, Gardai discovered 13 bags of suspected cannabis herb with an estimated street value of €130,000 in the Kilcummin wood and during a follow-up search was later carried out at house in the area a further €10,000 of suspected cannabis herb was seized.

Gardaí also seized a weighing scales and a small amount of cash and all of the suspected drugs will now be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.
