Mayor’s praise for wonderful, kind and caring family

St Mary’s Cathedral: Memorial Mass

A MEMORIAL Mass for the family that died in a shocking murder-suicide in America at the weekend is to be held in Killarney on Wednesday next.

Joan Huber, (née Kelly), who was originally from Coolcuslough, Killarney, was found dead at her home in Reno, Nevada before police found the bodies of her husband, Adam P, and their sons, Adam and Mikey, close by.

The memorial Mass on Wednesday will be at 7.30pm in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney and an opportunity to sympathise with family will take place immediately afterwards.

53-year-old Joan Huber is the daughter of Sheila (née Doolan) and the late John Kelly and one of five children. She has two brothers, Patrick and Denis, and two sisters, Kathryn and Bernadette.

Her father, who worked as a community psychiatric nurse attached to St Finan’s Hospital, was a high-profile former chairman and president of the East Kerry Board and a great community activist.

A respected historian and author who was also very involved in the promotion of rowing in Killarney, he once contested a general election in South Kerry for the Progressive Democrats. The late Mr Kelly passed away in February 2018.

Responding to a call from concerned neighbours, police in Reno, Nevada found the bodies of Joan Huber, her husband Adam P Huber (50) and their teenage children, Adam J Huber (17) and Michael Huber (16), in the house. The discovery was made shortly after 11.00am – or 7.00pm Irish time – on Wednesday.

Pending a full investigation, preliminary investigations indicate that it was murder-suicide and it believed the two adults and two teenage boys died as a result of gunshot wounds. The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to relatives.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Michael Gleeson, who is a friend and neighbour of the Kelly family, said they are wonderful, kind and caring.
