THE funeral has taken place of John O’Connell, of Gortroe, Fossa, Killarney, who was AIB manager in Killarney for many years.
Formerly of Knightstown, Valentia and a brother of Kerry GAA legend Mick O’Connell, he passed away on Saturday and Requiem Mass in the Prince of Peace Church in Fossa was followed by burial in Aghadoe Cemetery.
Quietly spoken, friendly and hugely popular with his former banking colleagues, John was an excellent sportsman.
MEP Seán Kelly, who lived next door to the O’Connell family for 30 years, said John had the very unique honour of winning two Captains’ Prize competitions in one day.
He said, like his brother, he was a great footballer and “a total gentleman.”
Predeceased by his wife, Helen, son John Jnr and sisters Catherine and Mary, John is survived by his daughters Mary, Maeve and Sinéad, seven grandchildren, his brother Michael, sisters Chris, Eileen and Noreen, many other relatives and friends.
