Moving service as Crokes remember old friends

Canon Tom Looney, wearing appropriately coloured black and amber vestments, celebrating the memorial Mass

IT wasn’t quite as personal as other years but it was just as relevant, just as important and just as poignant as members of Dr Crokes GAA Club paid their respects to deceased members.

Although Covid-19 restrictions prevented the traditional gathering in the clubhouse at Lewis Road, arrangements were made to celebrate the virtual memorial Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral to ensure members could join in online and offer their prayers for their friends, supporters and clubmates who have passed on since November 2019.

Chairman: Matt O’Neill

Killarney Parish Administrator, Fr Kieran O’Brien, willingly made the cathedral available for the occasion and the Mass was live streamed on the parish webcam as well as being broadcast on the club Facebook page courtesy of club videographer John C O`Shea.

The chief celebrant was Dr Crokes stalwart and club vice president Canon Tom Looney – who penned a book on the life and times of the legendary Dick Fitzgerald – and he was joined by fellow vice president Fr Paddy O’Donoghue and Fr Dick Dowling.

Newly elected club chairman Matt O’Neill obliged with the readings and prayers of the faithful.

Appropriate hymns and music for the occasion was provided by sisters and talented club members Lily and Jean Foley who were accompanied by master musician Noel Patrick O’Sullivan.
