KILLARNEY Musical Society has joined in the celebrations to mark the remarkable achievements of one of its former leading ladies who has been nominated for a BAFTA.
Jessie Buckley, from Killarney, previously won the AIMS Best Actress award in 2008 following a fabulous performance in Carousel and 20 years ago she made her stage debut with the musical society when she was part of the children’s chorus for Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in the Aras Phadraig.
Ironically, that’s the show the society will stage again this year and they will take to the stage at the INEC on February 25-27.
She has now been BAFTA shortlisted for her performance in Wild Rose and the 29-year-old was nominated in the Hollywood Film Critics’ Awards, in the category of Breakthrough Performance Actress, again for her role as Rose Lynn Harlan in Wild Rose.
At the Critis’c Choice Awards in Santa Monica, California last night, Jessie was deemed a winner for her song, Glasgow, which she performed in the movie. She shared the award with the legendary Elton John who was accepting for his song (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again from the film Rocketman.
“We are thrilled for her and feel so very proud of her achievements so far,” said PRO Orna Cleary O’Shea.
“What wonderful memories we have of great days in the past and this past week has been extra special for us all,” she added.
Following Jessie’s final performance in Carousel 12 years ago, Jessie headed to London to take part in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s BBC Talent show, I’d Do Anything and so began the journey to stardom.
“We wish her so much joy and happiness and, of course, luck,” said Orna.
“In our eyes, she’s a winner, always has been and always will be”.
