PRELIMINARY work got underway this week on the development of a new European-style contemporary arts centre and performance space in Killarney.
It will be located on the site of the existing cultural centre, on East Avenue Road, and the major refurbishment will include an ultra-modern facility which will be fully re-roofed to take in the whole site. The development will provide an internal and external performance space that can be flexible and adaptable to suit a variety of uses.
The outside area will be covered with a retractable canopy – ideal for summertime performances – while the stage can be external as well as internal, subject to weather conditions and specific requirements. It will allow an audience to view a performance from either inside or outside the building.
The Kerry County Council plan is for the area to be landscaped with steel overhead structures, in various shades of green, giving the impression that it is under a tunnel of trees, similar to areas in Killarney National Park.
New pavements will be inscribed with appropriate quotations from poets and other VIPs who have visited Killarney and the facility will also include a rehearsal space and meeting room and toilet facilities.
