New mayor outlines his priorities

FINE Gael’s John Sheahan has swapped chains to take over as Mayor of Killarney after a successful 12-month term as Mayor of Kerry.

He took up office as Killarney’s first citizen at the annual general meeting of Kerry County Council this Monday with outgoing mayor Cllr Niall Kelleher (FF) elected Deputy Mayor of Killarney.

Mayor Sheahan said action to tackle the notorious traffic blackspot at the junction linking Lewis Road and the bypass road would be his priority in the year ahead while he will also work towards finding a solution to the lack of parking and severe traffic congestion in the town.

Cllr Norma Foley (FF) is the new Mayor of Kerry with party colleague John Joe Culloty as her deputy and Labour’s Graham Spring succeeds her as Mayor of Tralee with Pat McCarthy (FG) as his deputy.

Aoife Thornton (FG) has become Listowel’s first citizen and Norma Moriarty (FF) is the new Caithaoirleach of South West Kerry., succeeding Jimmy Moloney (FF).

The position of leas cathaoirleach in South West Kerry was decided by the drawing of lots after Independent Dan McCarthy and Fianna Fáil’s Michael O’Shea had tied in a vote with McCarthy eventually selected.
