Next of kin should remain in family homes

Cllr Michael D O’Shea

CONCERN has been voiced that children of council house tenants could be made homeless when their parents pass away due to current legislation.

Cllr Michael D O’Shea has asked Kerry County Council to instruct its housing department to correct a long-standing anomaly that prohibits next of kin from continuing the tenancy of a local authority dwelling in the event of a death.

He said it would help to prevent homelessness when a parent is deceased.

Cllr O’Shea said action should be taken on compassionate grounds, if the next of kin were not part of the tenancy agreement but resided in the family home throughout their lives.
