Champions Dr Crokes, perhaps not surprisingly, totally dominated this year’s East Kerry All-Stars selection with the black and amber taking nine of the 15 dream team places up for grabs.
The awards were presented at a function in the Gleneagle Hotel with the reigning O’Donoghue Cup holders being feted for their impressive victory in the 2022 senior championship.
In addition, the club’s sharpshooting corner forward Tony Brosnan was crowned player of the year and collected his fifth All-Star while his clubmate, stylish defender Evan Looney, as named young player of the year and, obviously, both were included in the All-Star team.
The other Crokes players to make the cut were goalkeeper Shane Murphy, Mark Fitzgerald, Mark Cooper, Brian Looney, Mikey Casey and veterans Kieran O’Leary and Daithi Casey with the latter collecting his sixth All-Star.
Gneeveguilla had two players included, Owen Fitzgerald at corner back and Seán O’Keeffe at left half forward, Ryan O’Carroll from Spa was named in defence, Legion’s James O’Donoghue picked up his fourth award and the youthful midfield pairing chosen was Ruairi Murphy of Listry and Killarney Legion’s Cian Gammell, both currently with the Kerry senior panel.
The 12th annual awards night, sponsored by the Aquila Club and The Kerryman, in association with the East Kerry Board, saw Seán Cronin of Spa – a selector with the East Kerry senior team and the holder of four O’Donoghue Cup medals – named East Kerry Personality of the Year while Mike Allen from Firies, a great Gael who has devoted much of his life to the GAA, was inducted into the hall of fame.
