Plan to increase safety outside school gates

Two Mile School is located at the side of a local primary road between Killarney and Milltown

SERIOUS traffic issues have arisen in the vicinity of Two Mile School outside Killarney and the problems need to be rectified as soon as possible, a local councillor has stressed.

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae has voiced concerns about sight distance and speed outside the school and she has asked Kerry County Council to carry out a full assessment of the issues before implementing whatever solutions are required.

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae: Concerns

Council officials said the school is located at the side of a local primary road between Killarney and Milltown with a speed limit of 80kph but a 50kph limit applies on the approaches to the school.

The council said it has provided numerous traffic calming signage, road markings and driver feedback signage to inform drivers that they are entering a school zone.

The local authority pointed to the fact that the Department of Transport and Department of Education have initiated a safe routes to school programme which is operated through An Taisce’s green schools programme.

Kerry County Council said it has appointed an active travel officer who will liaise with those involved in implementing the programme as that would seem to be the most appropriate means of addressing the issues at Two Mile and providing solutions.
