The death has been announced of Gerard van Deventer, from Kenmare, who was one of the best known and most respected referees involved in Kerry soccer for many years.

Affectionately known as Pops, Gerard, from Templenoe, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family at University Hospital Kerry.

During his time as a soccer official, he took charge of all the major competitions in Kerry soccer and he was also involved as a referee at the annual Killarney seven-a-side summer soccer tournament. He was hugely respected as a very fair and very good no nonsense official.

The Kerry schoolboys and girls’ league said it was saddened to learn of the death of Gerard.

“Pops was a referee in Kerry for many, many years. The family was involved at the start of the club that has now become Inter Kenmare,” a statement said.

“We pass our deepest sympathies to Pops’ extended family and friends”.

Predeceased by his wife Joan, Gerard is survived by his children Craig, Gert, Tineke, Tjitske and Benas well as his grandchildren Jasmin, Ryan, Cori, Izzy, Keith, Jodi, Sam, Andrew, Daniel, Ella, Lily, Fiona, Kevin, Sinead, Tristan, Reuben, Aaron, Jade and great-grandchild Alfie.

He is further survived by his sister Jannie, daughters-in-law Caroline, Cathy, Mags, son-in-law Peter and Marius, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

Reposing at O’ Connor’s Funeral Home, Kenmare on Tuesday evening from 7.00pm to 8.30pm, Gerard (Pops) will be laid to rest on Wednesday at 12 noon in the New Templenoe Cemetery.
