A KILLARNEY woman who has dedicated much of her life to the community and to the promotion of sporting activities, has been named honorary president of Killarney Valley Athletics Club.

Eileen Switzer, from Dalton’s Avenue, is no stranger to accolades having previously received a Women of Ireland award from the government and woman of the year prizes from various community groups but, she said, this honour means more to her than anything else.

Eileen enjoys a light-hearted moment with the club’s Olympian Jordan Lee

Eileen has been involved in sport, in various guises, for 60 years and she was coach with the local badminton club for four decades as well as spearheading community games activities and helping to run Deerpark Pitch and Putt Club.

With her late husband, Frank, she was also very actively involved, as an event organiser and adjudicator, in Irish dancing competitions and even now, at the age of 81, she remains a very active volunteer with the Kerry Parents and Friends.

Eileen has also played a big part in the running of activities at St Mary’s Parish Hall for many decades, organising the weekly bingo, running the shop and supervising the youth club.

She is well known for her great patience, encouraging people of all abilities to get involved and for ensuring all activities are fun.
