Kerry TD, Pa Daly, has added his voice to calls for a new bypass road in Killarney with figures obtained by him confirming that the current bypass is one of the busiest roads in the southern and mid-west region.
He said the details of average traffic flow on the Killarney bypass – with an average of 19,000 vehicles travelling on it every day at this time of the year – make the case for a new bypass all the stronger.
“There is more daily traffic than on the Limerick to Dublin Road near Nenagh, the Waterford bypass and the motorway which bypasses Kilkenny,” he said.
He said it can’t be overlooked that the Killarney bypass is even busier in the summer when people and local businesses are more affected.
“The population of Kerry more than doubles during these months, with a lot of activity centred on Killarney,” Deputy Daly stated.
He said, in the meantime, other measures including extra parking at the edge of town and a bike scheme for Killarney need to be considered.
“Well rounded mobility plans are needed to keep pace with population growth,” Deputy Daly said.
Meanwhile, general election candidate Cllr Michael Cahill has urged Taoíseach Simon Harris and Táinaiste Micheál Martin to overrule Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan, to immediately provide sufficient funding to complete in full the Killarney-Farranfore bypass.
He said the Green Party minister is withholding funding for major road projects from Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
“The town of Killarney is choked with traffic and the proposed bypass road to Farranfore is vital to relieve the daily gridlock.
“Minister Ryan would be doing the environment a big favour by providing sufficient funding to complete the bypass. If he can’t understand that, I am sure Taoíseach Harris and Tàinaiste Martin can and they have the authority to make this happen for Killarney and Kerry,” Cllr Cahill stated.
