WITH icy overnight conditions forecast, Kerry County Council’s winter maintenance teams will be gritting priority routes – mainly the busiest national and secondary roads – as driving conditions are expected to be treacherous.

But an appeal has been issued to all road users to avoid travelling where possible but, if travel is absolutely necessary, they should drive with extreme care.

Met Éireann has issued a nationwide Yellow Alert for snow and ice leading to treacherous weather conditions tonight and into tomorrow.

Temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as minus four degrees with icy fog and the threat of black ice in many areas.

The snow alert will come into force from 11pm tonight and it will expire at 11am on Thursday.

A second alert for low temperatures and ice was also released, with a big freeze expected to hit between 8pm and 10am.
