Just days after it was confirmed that no section of the long awaited South Kerry Greenway will be open in 2025 – which came as a major disappointment to many – the Shannon Way Trail marked a significant milestone with the official opening of recently completed upgrade works from Tullahinell to Larha.
The work was carried out as next phase of renovation for the trail following the great work carried out by the Asdee community in recent years.
The event highlighted a renewed commitment to enhancing outdoor recreation, local connectivity and natural amenities for residents and visitors.

Hosted by Asdee Community Development Ltd, the was attended by councillors, Kerry Clounty Council management and staff, local landowners and key community stakeholders who have been involved in the initial upgrade works back in 2021.
John Kennedy, Chairperson of Asdee Community Development Ltd, said the project represents what can be achieved through partnership, vision and a shared love for the outdoors.

He thanked the volunteers from Asdee who initially took the initiative to upgrade a section of the trail, Kerry County Council for the investment and completing the works and the landowners without whose permission the project would not have been possible.
“The Shannon Way is now better positioned than ever to serve our community and attract visitors to the area,” Mr Kennedy said.
The project received significant investment of €200,000 from Kerry County Council, made possible through grant funding dedicated to improving rural recreation infrastructure.
The support was instrumental in delivering the high-quality upgrades now available to the public and the Shannon Way Trail upgrade is part of a broader initiative to enhance the trail from Ballybunion to Tarbert.
The upgraded section of the Shannon Way Trail offers improved accessibility, safety and enjoyment for walkers and those interesting in hiking trails.
