There was a real air of shock and sadness in Killarney as word filtered through on Saturday of the premature passing of popular local builder Tom O’Leary, following a very short illness.

Tom was the contractor engaged for the national award-winning Lackabane Village development in Fossa and he was also very actively involved in several other projects of note over the years.

A son of the late and long-serving South Kerry Fianna Fáil TD John O’Leary, and a brother of former Kerry County Council member and Mayor of Killarney, Brian O’Leary, Tom lived in Tiernaboul with his wife, Brid (nee Galvin) and their son Myles.

Soft spoken and pleasant with a great work ethic, Tom passed away at University Hospital Kerry on Saturday morning.

Predeceased by his parents John and Judy, he is survived by Bríd and Myles and his brothers Brian, Denis, John G, Des, Donal and Rory.

He is further survived by his in-laws Sheila Crowe, Doreen Lucey, Maria Galvin, Dermot Galvin and Carlo, sisters-in-law Eileen, Nora, Daphne, Barbara and Nicola, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Reposing at O’Shea’s Funeral Home, Killarney on Tuesday evening from 5.00pm to 6.30pm, will be followed by removal to St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 10.30am with burial afterwards in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery.
