IT wasn’t exactly a case of ‘Anything you can do I can do better’ but two sporting sisters certainly shared the limelight – and with great success – in the Kerry Basketball Cup finals at the weekend.
Ava Doherty played a key role as St Paul’s Basketball Club clinched the Division 1 Under 18 Cup with a convincing victory over Tralee Imperials while younger sister, Abbie, also made her mark the same day when she co-captained the club’s Under 12 team to a cup final victory against Imperials.
Ava, an outstanding and versatile young sports star, also lines out with Dr Crokes and the Kerry senior ladies’ football team.
To show her dedication to both codes, she played with the Kerry side that beat Wexford in the National League in Enniscorthy before embarking on a marathon 254km journey from to Tralee for the basketball final later that evening but it proved a worthwhile journey.
Younger sister, Abbie, was joint captain of the Under 12 team – along with Ava Weldon and Siofra Randles – and they are currently preparing for an international tournament in London at the end of April.
Ava and Abbie are the daughters of Francis and Aileen Doherty from Glenflesk.
