Bah humbug! The spirit of Christmas wasn’t very much in evidence in Killarney late on Tuesday night and speculation is mounting that the Grinch might have been out and about attempting to take some of the sparkle from the season of goodwill.
A set and a half of twinkling lights that were adorning two feature trees put in place near Santa’s Grotto at Deenagh Lodge – in Killarney National Park – mysteriously vanished overnight and the elves helping to decorate the attraction were very surprised and a little bewildered by what they saw – or rather didn’t see – when they arrived there this Wednesday morning.
Santa Claus told KillarneyToday.com that his head elf, Diarmuid, made the grim discovery and that he was very disappointed after all the hard work that had been put in.
But the great news is that they won’t let it spoil Christmas and Santa’s Grotto will be open for business – tree lights and all – this Friday.
The special lights have been placed in very carefully selected areas this year to ensure the bats that fly over Knockreer aren’t dazzled.
Santa, Mrs Claus and the elves are very excited to meet all the boys and girls and their mums and dads in the coming weeks. He will be in situ on Thursdays and Fridays from 4pm to 9pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11.30am to 6pm and advance booking is essential.
On arrival, every boy and girl will be greeted by the gatekeeper who will mark their passwords with a special North Pole stamp before the enter the thatched cottage.
Inside they will visit the post office with the musical postbox, meet the mischievous elves and Mrs Claus in her parlour before joining Santa in his office where he will be double checking his list.
