Aiming high: Ríain Foley getting in some practice foe the big event in Mexico City

A TALENTED young Kerry athlete and sportsman is on his way to Mexico City this week to compete in the ITF Union Open Taekwon-Do World Championships.

Ríain Foley will weigh in on Friday for the weight division in sparring and that will be followed by a seminar where ninth degree black belt Masters and Grand Masters from all over the world will address competitors and perform demonstrations with a light training session included.

On Saturday Riain will have two main competitions, one to demonstrate the technical movements of the discipline and sparring which will be based on a points system.

Taekwon-Do isn’t the only sport that Ríain excels in as he is also an accomplished minor footballer with Milltown-Castlemaine with his father, John, the current club chairman.

Taekwon-Do is a Korean form of martial arts, characterised by punching and kicking techniques, with emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping spinning kick, and fast kicking techniques.
