Cake for a champ: Alana at the welcome home celebrations

Alana O’Brien narrowly lost out in gold in a dramatic finale with a Ukrainian opponent in the 45kg division and she had some justification to feel a little bit aggrieved that she was not bringing home gold.

A daughter of Dan and Michelle O’Brien from Hazlewood Drive, Killarney, Alana did her club boxing in Tralee ans she is a triple Irish champion and remains the national title holder.

Former St Oliver’s National School and Killarney Community College Alana (14) and fellow European boxer Elma Barry (40kg) were given a star welcome home when they returned to Kildare –  where she is currently residing and training with the Setanta Boxing Club.
