The High Court has quashed An Bord Pleanála’s decision to refuse planning permission for Shannon LNG’s plans for a gas terminal in North Kerry.
In the High Court Justice Richard Humphreys ruled in upheld Shannon LNG’s view that the decision was invalid as it failed to consider relevant considerations including the Kerry County Development Plan.
Ireland South MEP Billy Kelleher has described the ruling as “a win for common sense” and for energy security in Ireland.
“Finally, we are seeing decisions being made with common sense at its core. The decision by An Bord Pleanála in 2023 was a mistake,” he said.
The Fianna Fail MEP added: “We need energy security in our countryand the addition of an LNG facility in Kerry, or anywhere for what matter, would be a welcome addition to our energy mix”.
“Renewables will, of course, provide the vast majority of our energy supply into the future but we need back-ups for when the wind doesn’t blow or when the sun doesn’t shine,” said Mr Kelleher.
