WITH eight top Irish jockeys currently among the walking wounded – including Kerry’s Bryan Cooper who is recovering from surgery on his leg – a major new initiative has been launched to raise funds for injured jockeys.
Eleven-time National Hunt champion Ruby Walsh was joined by trainee jockeys from the Racing Academy and Centre of Education to launch the Jog for Jockeys 5km and 10km races at the Curragh Racecourse on Sunday, August 21 with all proceeds going to the cause which provides financial assistance to jockeys when they are out injured.
The events will see participants walk, jog or run on the iconic Curragh plains, including running up the iconic home-straight of the Curragh Racecourse.
Ruby Walsh, who is chairman of the the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund, said: “The Jog for Jockeys is a pretty special race, allowing runners and racing fans access to the world-famous Curragh Racecourse to run with lots of top jockeys and trainers”.
The 10km route is a great cross-country test for the more serious runner, while the 5km is perfect for fun runners and their families. All runners who pre-register online will receive a race t-shirt and will be provided with timing chips to record accurate race times.
Participants are asked to register online at www.jogforjockeys.ie. Online entry costs €20 for each run, entry on the day costs €25 and the fee for a team of five is €100. All children can take part free of charge.
