School honours its great achievers

SCOIL Phobail Sliabh Luachra in Rathmore has honoured its brightest and best at an annual student awards ceremony which celebrated several great achievements inside and outside the classrooms.

The Leaving Certificate Student of the Year was bright spark Diarmaid Nagle whose excellent results saw him in the top 0.3 % of students to accomplish such high grades and, in addition to that, he never missed a day of secondary school.

11 students scored higher than 500 points and they were Diarmaid Nagle, Kieran Dalton, Shauna Davies, Gearóid O’Leary, Cathal Collins, Bríd O’Connor, Derry McCarthy, Kayla O’Riordan, Brian Courtney, Katie Horgan and Hannah Wright.

The Junior Certificate Student of the Year joint winners, both with nine A-grades, were Aisling Brosnan and Susan Cahill and other Junior Cert excellence honours went to Mary Collins, Gemma Cremin, Damien Cronin, Liam McSherry, Siobhán Mc Sweeney, Sarah O’Connor, Dawid Herdzik and Brogan McCarthy.

Awards for exceptional contribution in activities outside of school award recipients included Kerry minor footballers Darragh Rahilly, Dan Murphy, Owen Fitzgerald and David Dineen who were part of the Kerry five-in-a-row team while the school’s outstanding basketballers and other sports stars were also honoured.

The creative award recipient was Darren O’Connor, a leadership award was presented to Derry McCarthy and the Sliabh Luachra Cultural and Arts Award went to Mark O’Leary.

Anne Casey Memorial Trophy award winner, Madhbh Dennehy, with her brother Michael recipient of a basketball award, principal Denis Kerins, her grandmother Mrs Fitzgerald , her parents Mike and Kathleen Dennehy, with Declan Casey, teacher and brother of the late Anne Casey-Joy who was a home economics teacher in the school

Anne Casey memorial award, a tribute to a former popular Homhome economics teacher, was won by Madhbh Dennehy, the Business Team Enterprise Award recipients were Lee Phelan, Daniel Burke O’Donoghue, Luke Kennedy and Maciej Kmita and activities outside of school excellence awards were presented to Joshua O’Sullivan, Michael McSweeney and Amelia Swiczewska.

Team Maths award winners were Kieran Dalton, Shauna Davies, Diarmaid Nagle and Cathal Collins.

Spirit of the School awards were presented to first cousins Rachel MGillicuddy and Michelle O’Sullivan while Excellence in School Attendance award recipients included Diarmaid Nagle, Niamh Finnegan, Páraic Finnegan, Joshua O’Sullivan, Chanel Jenkins, Cathal Bradley, Brendan Casey, Michelle Cronin, Andrea Walsh, Jessica Walsh, Róisín Brosnan, Holly Adair Duggan, Ciara Hickey and Marian Nagle.
