THIS was the disgusting sight that greeted passers-by on a rural roadway not far from Killarney town.
Two old and damaged sofas were ruthlessly dumped close to the side of the road at Cockhill bog in Kilcummin and other household rubbish was also discovered in the vicinity.
Due to the Covid-19 crisis, more people have been using the beautiful remote walks within the bog in recent weeks but, it is clear from these images, some people have also taken advantage of the quieter period by dumping their household rubbish and leaving the mess for others to clean up.
John Moriarty of Kilcummin Rural Development has encouraged anybody that might have noticed anything suspicious to contact the Environmental Department of Kerry County Council or to the gardai.
“Kilcummin Rural Development and Kerry County Council previously carried out a major clean-up of the area and it is vitally important that the effort was not in vain and the area is kept litter free,” said Mr Moriarty.
Kerry County Council recently confirmed that 103 complaints of illegal dumping were received in the Killarney Municipal District in 2019 and that evidence found at the scene led to 19 fines being issued.
A total of eight litter prosecutions convictions were secured in the county last year.
