Signs to relieve concerns at danger junction

Poulgorm Junction in Clonkeen

Several signs are to be erected just prior to an accident blackspot outside Killarney advising motorists that there is a junction ahead.

This follows concerns raised by Cllr John O’Donoghue who asked for safety measures to be implemented at the R569 Poulgorm Bridge junction, at the turn-off for Kilgarvan from the main N22 Killarney-Cork road.

Cllr O’Donoghue said it is consistently an accident blackspot and until the speed limit is reduced and some extra lighting is put in place to highlight that there is a junction there, the problem will not be resolved.

“My great fear is that we will have a fatality here. While some improvements have been made at the junction, local residents feel that these measures do not go far enough and it remains a source of worry for them,” Cllr O’Donoghue said.

“Reducing the speed limit to 80kph would go a long way in addressing these concerns,” he said.

Kerry County Council officials said funding has been approved by Transport Infrastructure Ireland to implement new signage improvements giving additional advance warning to motorists and preventing overtaking.

At least eight new signs are to be erected with flashing lights after dark.

Cllr O’Donoghue said it was very positive development as it will make the junction much more visible by alerting oncoming motorists.

“While these changes may not solve the issue completely, they are a huge step in the right direction,” he said.
