KILLARNEY pitch and putt star Damien Fleming came dramatically close to glory at the National Senior Men’s Strokeplay finals held in Navan, Co Meath at the weekend.
The Deerpark club chairman and star player finished second after he had tied with Killineer of Louth’s Ian Donnelly on 29 under par after a marathon 54 holes.
They had to play another nine holes to determine the winner and although Damien was one ahead with three to play, a bogey and the seventh and a birdie for his opponent meant the momentum had shifted.
Donnelly eventually closed out the win on the ninth hole.
It has been an amazing year for Damien, however, as he first and second in the two nationals as he is assured of being Irish number one for the second time in three years.
John McGrath, also of Deerpark, finished on 12 under par after 36 holes, two off making the final 18 play-off.
