THERE was only one winner from two local derby clashes in Division 1 of the County Football League at the weekend with Spa surprising Dr Crokes with a two-point victory while Killarney Legion and East Kerry rivals Rathmore shared the spoils.

The latter clash was always going to be a hard fought battle and indeed it was with both sides exchanging score for score with Finbarr Murphy and Peter McCarthy keeping the scoreboard ticking over for Legion.

The return of Shaun Keane at midfield was a welcome sight and he contributed two points as Legion led by two at the break but the second half saw Rathmore battle back with a 38th minute free leaving the sides deadlocked on 11 points each.

Spa, meantime, registered a 1-14 to 0-15 victory over the black and amber, with both sides considerably understrength, and a stronger finish led to a Spa victory.

The defining moment in the game, however, was in injury time in the first half when wing back Ciaran Spillane got through for a goal at a stage when Crokes were 0-10 to 0-6 in front.

Crokes still managed to squeeze ahead in the 55th minute when the stylish Mark O’Shea sent over a point but that was their last score of the game with Spa upping the tempo with fine performances from centre forward Niall O’Mahony, Niall McCarthy and Shane Cronin.
