A NEW state-of-the-art athletic track in Killarney is up and running after seven years of planning and fundraising by the dedicated committee.
The Killarney Valley AC arena incorporates an astro turf playing pitch surrounding a top class four-lane 200m track with an additional 100m sprint straight.
It has a world class long jump and triple jump facility as well as a shot putt area and top notch high jump facility.
The floodlit arena, which is ideal for winter training, has come at a cost of €517,000 but the development is considered to be priceless due to its town centre location adjacent to the three local secondary schools and primary schools.
3,000 pupils in local schools will have use of the facility up to 5.00pm on school days and it is open for rental by community groups at all other times.
The South/East Kerry Rural Recreational Track Ltd said the project wouldn’t have happened without the generosity of the Diocese of Kerry, Kerry County Council, South Kerry Development Partnership and the Department of Sport for the site donation and the necessary capital grant aid required to bring the facility to life.
Donations from the public were also received and many fundraising activities were held over the years.
There is still a funding gap of over €100,000 and the club is still inviting donations from the business community and individuals. See https://www.gofundme.com/f/killarney-valley-ac-arena for more.
To mark the opening of the facility, the Killarney Valley Athletics Club will host a Zero to 5k event when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted and it is permitted safe to do so.
