A special amnesty to allow people to dispose of unwanted mattresses legally is being planned by Kerry County Council to avoid the risk of unsightly dumping.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said funding has recently been secured for the initiative and he asked council officials what timeframe they were planning to introduce the amnesty period.

“It’s important that we take advantage of the summertime. Nobody wants to be dragging mattresses out in the rain,” he said.

Kerry County Council official, Ger O’Brien, said it would more than likely be September before the project is launched.

“We are currently looking at options for the proposed event, including a potential location for same,” he said.

The illegal dumping of old, damaged and heavily stained mattresses has been a significant problem in Kerry over the years with occasional reports of the unwanted bed structures being discovered at  rural roadsides, in boglands and along scenic walkways.
