WITH a very concerning 500 newly diagnosed cases confirmed in the Killarney municipal district in the 14-day period up to Monday last, concern is now rising about the potential and imminent posed by the new Omicron variant that is spreading throughout Europe.
The latest worry comes against a backdrop of 3,735 new cases of Covid-19 being confirmed nationwide in the last 24 hours and, early this morning, 566 patients were in hospital with the disease and 117 were in intensive care.
The National Public Health Emergency Team is meeting this weekend to discuss a course of action to prepare for the new coronavirus variant emerging around the world with cases already confirmed in the UK, Italy, Germany and Belgium.
NPHET said it is monitoring the situation and considering further required measures.
