IF Liverpool FC don’t become champions of Europe for a sixth time this Saturday night it won’t be for the want of prayers being offered up by a Kerry priest who is a passionate, diehard red.
Popular Ballyduff PP Fr Brendan Walsh is a lifelong fan and he has been offering a quiet prayer or two in the lead up to the final that they will prove too good for Tottenham Hotspur in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.
Fr Brendan, who also ministers in Ballyduff and Ballyheigue, is hoping to be finished his duties this Saturday in plenty of time to allow him to pull up a seat and cheer on his sporting heroes.
A regular at Anfield, he would love to be at the at game but he will have to be content with tuning in to roar on Jurgen Klopp’s superstars.
Fr Brendan – who spent a number of years as a curate in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney – is well-known throughout Kerry and he hit the headlines a few short weeks ago on the evening of his 60th birthday (click on link).
He was just concluding Mass in the Church of St Peter and Paul in Ballyduff when a cake with the Liverpool crest was brought on to the altar and the choir burst into a rousing rendition of the Liverpool anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone.
To add a touch of irony, the surprise celebration was organised by parish sacristan Mike Guerin – a passionate Manchester United fan.
Fr Brendan reckons You’ll Never Walk Alone should be heard more often in Church as, he said, it focuses on community, togetherness and hope and he described it as very moving and emotions.
As for the result of Liverpool v Spurs? 2-0, predicts Fr Brendan who plans to have a word with his boss before kick-off.
