TD says we must strive for a Covid-free island

Michael Healy-Rae: Many people who have booked trips abroad are still awaiting refunds

THE government has been urged to act now and not wait until July 9 to produce an air travel green list of countries where the 14-day quarantine will not apply.

Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae said coalition should focus on the many people who are either being declined refunds from airlines or are still awaiting them, in some cases months after their flights were cancelled.

“Many people who have booked trips abroad, which were cancelled, are still awaiting their refunds,” he said.

“Many more who wish to cancel them are between a rock and a hard place as airlines reopen routes thus putting an unfair onus on families to either travel abroad or lose their money. It is most unfair and the government have gone missing on this one,” the Kerry TD said.

Deputy Healy-Rae said the government needs to ensure that airlines provide clear clarity on refunds to people and they need to answer customers who are awaiting them.

“This money can at least be spent on domestic holidays,” he said.

The Independent TD said that the most important thing now for the country is to build a sustainable Covid-19 suppression infrastructure.

“We have one chance at getting this right this summer so that we can prevent future surges and further enforced lockdowns.

“We must strive for a Covid-free island and allow our domestic tourism industry a chance to fight back some of the losses they have endured,” Deputy Healy-Rae stressed.
