
The death has occurred of Fr Philip O’Connell, a priest who served in several parishes throughout Kerry during his long ministry.
Ordained in 1960, he spent three years working in Wales before returning to the parish of Boherbue in north Cork.
Fr Philip later served in Eyeries, Castletownbere, Glenbeigh and Tarbert Comprehensive School as chaplain.
He then transferred to Kenmare, he ministered in Dromid/Waterville from 1989 to 1995 and his final parish was Ballylongford.
He spent 16 years in Ballylongford and celebrated the golden jubilee of his ordination in May 2010 before retiring in 2012 along with his former classmate Fr Patrick Sugrue, Killeentierna, and Fr Jim Browne Gneeveguilla/Rathmore.
Fr Philip, from Chapel Street in Tarbert, passed away in Our Lady of Fatima Home, Tralee.
Predeceased by his parents Jerry and May, his brother Denis and his sisters Esther and Kathleen, he is survived by his brothers Wim and Jerry, his sisters Carmel and Anne, Bishop Ray Browne and fellow priests of the diocese, brother in law Brian, sister in law Vera, relatives and friends.
Fr Philip will repose at St Mary’s Church, Tarbert, on Monday from 5.00pm until 8.00pm and the Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11.00am. Interment to follow in the Chapel Yard.
