REPUBLIC of Ireland soccer legend Niall Quinn met another legend on his visit to Killarney at the weekend where he enjoyed Kerry summertime hospitality at its best.
The former Arsenal, Manchester City and Sunderland striker and his travelling companions enjoyed the spectacular Gap of Dunloe boat tour with hugely popular boatman Donal ‘Dux’ O’Donoghue as their guide.
Donal, a wonderfully witty raconteur, filled Niall in on local history and folklore and, of course, no trip on the lakes with the said boatman would have been complete without a few tall stories – some even taller than Niall Quinn himself!
Donal’s family-run traditional boat tours have undoubtedly been the highlight of visits to Killarney for tens of thousands of holidaymakers down through the years and the now 54-year-old Quinn thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The former Chairman of Sunderland FC, who won 92 caps and scored 21 goals for his country, played in two World Cups and the 1988 European Championships and he was one of Jack Charlton’s go-to stars when a big performance was needed.
