And after the big freeze comes the bigger thaw.

The snow is turning to slush throughout Kerry, roads are becoming safer and the disruption caused to everyday life since last Sunday will soon become a distant memory.

But don’t become too complacent just yet as Kerry County Council has warned that care is still needed on most routes with patches of black ice persisting, particularly on local roads.

“Where rain has fallen on packed snow and untreated roads this has led to more treacherous icy conditions. Extreme caution is advised,” the council said.

In addition, footpaths may be extremely slippery due to the rain falling on the snow and special care should be taken on pavements and cycle lanes.

The civic amenity site at Coolcashlagh is open this Friday but the site in Milltown remains closed.

The council has thanked the volunteer crews who have provided numerous rescue, transport and community safety tasks in very challenging conditions.

In the meantime, with roads slowly but surely returning to normal, Killarney remains a winter wonderland with some spectacular sights to enjoy and the coating of snow greatly enhancing the beauty of the natural environment.
