A FORMER Killarney town councillor, who has been a long-time disability rights campaigner, has turned his attention from politics to sport with super success.
Tom Doherty, who served on the council for Fianna Fail, is now a key member of the Kingdom Wlheelblasters wheelchair basketball club and they have just completed their first national league season – a long, tough campaign – with a very significant victory.
They travelled to the UCD Sports Centre in Dublin to take on North East Wolves from Derry and, after a terrific performance, the silverware, in the form of the Gerald Larkin Cup, was brought home to Kerry by a thrilled Tom and his team-mates who registered a 28-14 victory.
“The team is already looking forward to the new season and we would welcome new members to get involved in this exciting sport,” he said.
