The tough get going on the mountains

THRILLSEEKING adventure lovers took to the hills at the weekends to test their stamina in Killarney’s ultimate high peaks challenge.

The spectacular one-day mountain challenge event, on the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, was a real endurance and self-sufficiency challenge on some of Ireland’s toughest mountain terrain.

Now in its fourth year, the challenge is certainly the pinnacle of all mountain adventures with the most dramatic mountain scenery in Ireland and it was an exhilarating and truly unique event which saw participants self-navigating along a pre-planned, fully stewarded route.

Organised by Kerryclimbing.ie, adventure enthusiasts trekked over 25 km of stunning, wild, rugged mountain terrain, ticking off many of Ireland’s highest summits with a total height gain of over 2,500 meters.

The traversed the entire MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, including Carrauntoohil, Beenkeragh and Cruach Mór, beginning their endurance at 5.00am, scrambling over Ireland’s highest ridges and hardcore terrain.

The organisers, Piaras and Catherine Kelly of Kerryclimbing.ie, have stressed that it is not a race but it will allow participants will test their personal navigational skills, fitness, determination and stamina.
