THERE was hugely positive news for Killarney this Friday with confirmation that €200,000 has been allocated to improve access to Torc Mountain and an additional €2000,000 is to be spent on the Kerry Way along the Old Kenmare Road.

The grants have been approved by the Department of Rural and Community Affairs, under the Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Fund, following an application for funding submitted by Kerry County Council.

Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher, welcomed the news and said the funding was badly needed as roads in both places were in a state of disrepair.

€200,000 is to be spent on enhancing the Old Kenmare Road.

“I had made several representations, over several years, for this work to be done and I am delighted to see it is finally about to happen,” he said.

The allocations have also been welcomed by Kerry TD Brendan Griffin who said it will greatly enhance the facilities for walkers and visitors.

“This announcement follows on from the announcement in November 2019 of the allocation of €1.83 million to 109 projects. The grants will support a mix of projects including new developments, the upgrade and repair of existing recreational trails in rural areas and the delivery of quality visitor experiences,” he said.

The Old Kenmare Road allocation will go towards the creation of a multi-user trail between Kenmare and Galway’s Bridge while the Torc access grant will cover the maintenance and enhancement of access trails.

In addition, a further €72,429 has been set aside to upgrade public conveniences at Banna Beach.

Over 40 outdoor recreational projects, including walking trails, hiking paths and cycleways, will benefit from a total of €8.4 million funding to be spent nationwide.

The department will provide €4.4 million in funding with an additional €4 million covered by Fáilte Ireland.
