IT’S very much a case of calm after the storm as Killarney reflects on a hugely successful John West Féile na Peil 2016 which attracted several thousand people to the county, as well as north Cork and west Limerick, at the weekend.
GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghail and Ladies’ Association President, Marie Hickey, officiated and a total of 250 clubs, made up of 125 host clubs along with 125 visiting clubs, participated.
This was further broken down as 80 boys’ clubs and 45 girls’ clubs, mainly from Ireland but also with 12 clubs from America, the UK and one from France for the first time ever.
Proud organisers point to the fact that it was Europe’s single biggest youth sporting event in 2016 with in excess of 6,000 young people participating.
With local clubs playing hosts to the masses, there were over 630 games all around the south west region and organisers estimated the event brought approximately 60,000 people to the area to watch the games.
There were nine gala parades held throughout the south west region on the Saturday evening and Killarney’s was one of the most colourful.
