Two projects from bright spark Kerry students brought home no less than four major awards from the national finals of the Student Enterprise Awards held in The Helix in Dublin yesterday.

In the junior category Cáit Daly, Kirsten O’Connor, Ellie Curtin, Brid Curtin and Laura McShane from Presentation Secondary School, Castleisland – with their Roley Poley project – created an outdoor bench and retrofit seat covering to ensure a dry seat after a rain shower.

This business idea won a national intellectual property award and secured third place in the junior category.

Also from Presentation Secondary School in Castleisland are Katelyn Curtin and Orlaith Buckley who designed a farm safety mechanism which allows ropes under tension on a calving jack to be instantly released at the flick of a lever.

In this senior category, the business idea also received an intellectual property award and a special merit award.

The awards were presented by Tánaiste and Enterprise, Trade and Employment Minister, Leo Varadkar.

Tomás Hayes, Head of Local Enterprise Office, praised the schools, the students, their teachers and parents.

“It is a notable achievement for Presentation Secondary School in Castleisland to bring home four national awards,” he said.

“This competition has over 16,000 entrants across six different categories so it is a great outcome. I must commend the teachers Edward Clarke and Pierce Dargan for their efforts and the mentor Paola Kennedy for her support.”

Kerry Programme Coordinator, Margaret Murphy, said: “This was a very strong programme in 2022 requiring extensive work by students, teachers, mentors and staff which was made more difficult this year because of the restrictions of Covid-19”.
