WORK has commenced and is progressing at quite a pace on a new public bus and car park on Rock Road in Killarney.
Killarney Municipal District Council acquired the site, owned by the Mercy Order, for the facility which will have a total capacity for 190 vehicles.
The 1.25-acre site is located between the entrance to the old Mercy Laundry and Áirne Villa, near the entrance to Killarney Nursing Home, and it is expected to be completed in time for the 2019 tourist season.
A long-standing traditional stone wall and stone pillar gates will be rebuilt but set back a further 4.5m from the main road.
New vehicular entrances will accommodate a footpath and cycle lane from the new bus and car park to an existing footpath at the High Street junction. A new entrance to the car park, with electronic gates, will be constructed.
The council has also agreed to build a new boiler house for the John Paul II Pastoral Centre which is adjacent to the site.
Some residents in the Rock Road and Allman’s Terrace area were known to have concerns about the plans which were addressed during the consultation process.
